Our Story & Mission

Our Story

Open Avenues has served the NWA region since 1975. Originally founded as the Adult Development Center of Benton County, our community driven approach was born out of necessity: to provide services for Adults with Disabilities beyond a traditional school setting. Our early programming quickly evolved as organizers realized the participants’ capabilities and their fulfillment when accomplishing work related goals. Today, Open Avenues supports more than 100+ participants through life and job skills training, on-site employment, community employment, a high school transition program, and transportation services.

Through our progressive programs we empower participant independence while increasing the capability and reliability of our NWA workforce. We are building the case for increased access and inclusion from local and national employers. Organizational diversity and inclusion statements often overlook adults with disabilities, and we aim to change that.

Any diagnosed disability qualifies someone to participate in our programs, including developmental & intellectual disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Down Syndrome, head injuries, physical disabilities, and mental illness. We believe people who want to work or learn to work, should have access to that opportunity regardless of their disability. By experiencing the dignity that comes with working, our participants gain a sense of community and independence. We offer a place free of judgment where people can grow and develop in their own way and at their own pace.

We employ a wide range of qualified individuals to carry out our mission. Training Center supervisors, community job coaches, ADL instructors, and CDL licensed bus drivers are just some of the support staff who work with participants and continue growing alongside them through their journey at Open Avenues. While many have previous experience in social work and human services, all staff are required to go through several hours of training at the beginning of their employment and yearly thereafter to ensure safety and continued education. Open Avenues also employs administrative and supervisory staff to ensure our mission and program goals are met.
